I
came from a big family (12 kids), grew up on Cape Cod, and pretty
much always knew I'd end up living in greater Boston. I went to Colby
College in Maine, studied psychology and human development, and moved
after graduation (in the mid-1980s) to Somerville, then Cambridge,
and now beautiful Medford. I have no intention of leaving. After getting
an MSW in 1988, I began working with children and families as a clinical
social worker. Since 1993, I've directed a school program for kids
with emotional issues. I love my job, but appreciate my gig at Something
About the Women as something totally different from what I do during
the work week!
My connection
to SATW began in the early 1990s when I was a regular listener to
the show. A couple of years back, a college friend (who knew I always
secretly wanted to become a DJ) heard that SATW was looking to expand
the collective of hosts, and much to my amazement, I got trained and
joined the show in 2003. Since I was a kid, I've loved radio - music,
talk, news, features, sports - college, commercial, community, you
name it. Getting to be a host for this show was a spectacular stroke
of good fortune. I love the "freeform" format of WMFO, and
focusing on music by women artists is close to my heart and my politics.
When I host the show, I do a feature called a "Six Pack,"
in which I play six songs either by one artist or connected to one
theme... and listener suggestions are always welcome!
In addition
to radio, I enjoy music from the perspective of a singer, and as someone
who has a knack for remembering lyrics to many songs and most advertising
jingles. I'm also into being married in Massachusetts, my dogs, the
Red Sox, social justice activism, my small faith community (Dignity/Boston),
movies, time spent with friends, the Food Network, and my bike! I
am a cycling enthusiast and will again participate in the Mass
Red Ribbon Ride across Massachusetts in August.
